Soweto Township
South Africa’s most famous township is also by far the largest in population. The township was developed for black people during the apartheid system. Did you know that the name Soweto is an acronym, made up – in apartheid days – from the first letters of the words “south western township”? Soweto is also known for being home to South Africa’s first black president – Nelson Mandela.
Vilakazi Street
Make your way to the vibrant Vilakazi Stree! The street is not only famous for its filled culture but also it’s history as 2 Nobel prize winners have lived there – Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu . But there is more to Vilakazi Street. A block away from here Hector Peterson was killed by police during the students’ uprising of June 16 1976, today celebrated as Youth Day. Now the Hector Peterson Museum and memorial stand on the corner of Moema and Vilakazi Streets.
Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial
The museum is named after one of the first casualties during the march in 1976, June 16. The march was prompted by a new policy that the Apartheid government introduced. Learners from different schools in Soweto had gathered to march on the day.
Together with the memorial, the museum commemorates those who died in the uprisings, and celebrates the students’ role in the struggle for freedom.
Soweto Towers
Originally the site of a coal fired power station but now the towers have become one of the most distinctive landmarks in Soweto and the site of the world’s first bungee jump between two cooling towers. These two towers must be the coolest in the world adorned as they are with stunning Soweto street art. This also makes the prime spot to do something daring and have an adventure. The towers offer a variety of adventure activities but one that stands out is Bungee Jumping.
